Understanding the NDIS & How Funding Works

NDIS funding for exercise physiology, physiotherapy and dietetics explained

For people needing in home disability support, the NDIS can provide funding for numerous services, including allied health therapies. As an NDIS service provider, Active Ability offers mobile exercise physiology, dietetics and physiotherapy services for people with intellectual disability, mental health conditions and neurological disorders.

Here’s more about what the NDIS covers and how to get therapy funding in your NDIS plan.

Do I have funding for exercise physiology, dietetics and physiotherapy in my NDIS plan?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides support for Australians with a permanent and significant disability and their families and carers. It is designed to support people with disability to develop skills and capacity so they can participate in work and community life.

The NDIS is responsible for funding allied health and other therapy services related to a person’s disability. These therapies fall under the NDIS ‘Capacity Building’ support budget.

Allied health services such as exercise physiology, dietetics and physiotherapy are funded under the ‘Improved Health and Wellbeing’ and/or ‘Improved Daily Living’ categories of your NDIS Capacity Building Supports budget.

If you have funds allocated to these categories, you can access these allied health support services. If your current budget is allocated to other categories and you’d like to receive allied health services, you can make changes at your next plan review. Alternatively, you may be able to access an assessment and report utilising some funding from your Core Supports budget. Contact us to find out more.

Can Active Ability help me get therapy funding in my next NDIS plan?

Yes! As in-home disability support experts, Active Ability can help you access funding for allied health services that support you to achieve better health, independence and quality of life.

We start the process by assessing the impact of disability on your current function and capacity and talking to you about your goals.

Then, we provide a detailed report based on our assessment results and your related NDIS goals. Our report will address all the NDIS reasonable and necessary criteria, to ensure the funding report will meet the burden of proof the NDIS planner will be looking for.

We recommend this process should start two months before your meeting with the NDIA, so they receive our report in plenty of time.

Get the best value from your NDIS plan

The NDIS doesn’t provide a separate budget for travel. We don’t charge travel fees, ever, which means your therapy budget can be spent entirely on therapy.

Get a comprehensive treatment plan

Funding under the NDIS is based on evidence of need, your goals, and evidence for the effectiveness of a given treatment approach. Your treatment plan is your gateway to getting the support you need.

Our treatment plans are based on a thorough assessment of your therapy goals and are related back to your NDIS goals. They:

  • clearly explain assessment findings
  • make specific recommendations
  • focus on outcomes that we expect will be achieved in the next twelve months
  • explain how success will be measured and reported to the NDIA

We send all our treatment plans to our clients for consultation and approval before implementing them.

Our multi-disciplinary approach

A multidisciplinary approach is recognised as the best way to support people with complex needs. Active Ability have dietetics, physiotherapy and exercise physiology all in house, so we can provide a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach to your therapy.

When working with external providers, we’re known for our efficient, timely and regular communication. This helps ensure everyone involved in your therapy is on the same page.

Our exceptional reporting skills

Active Ability’s reports are guaranteed to address the reasonable and necessary criteria required by the NDIA when they are making decisions about funding.

We get consistent positive feedback and compliments about our reports from families, support coordinators and local area coordinators.

Our physiotherapists are also highly experienced in the provision of AT reports to ensure our clients receive the support they need to mobilise safely using assistive technology.
