Meet Ruby!

Ruby is a 10-year-old who has been on her physiotherapy journey with Active Ability for the past year, working towards her motor milestone goals whilst developing strength, confidence, and a growing love of movement.

When Ruby first started her physiotherapy intervention, she found physical activity challenging. She had difficulty with core strength, coordination, endurance, and confidence. This made it hard to keep up with her peers during school sports and extracurricular activities, and as a result, Ruby can feel fatigued and overwhelmed, leading to increased anxiety around movement and reduced participation in group activities.

Challenges Before Physio Intervention

Ruby was experiencing:

● Reduced core and overall strength

● Difficulties with balance and coordination

● Low endurance and early fatigue

● Reduced confidence with movement

● Anxiety around physical and group activities

Keeping up with peers felt tough — and physical challenges often felt overwhelming.

How Physiotherapy Has Helped

Ruby’s physiotherapy program focused on building skills in a fun, supportive, game-based way! Sessions took place across both home and school environments to help Ruby feel confident everywhere she goes.

Her program targeted:

● Gross motor skills (jumping, landing, running)

● Ball skills and coordination

● Core and overall strength

● Posture and abdominal stability

● Cardiovascular endurance

Using exciting and engaging activities like:

● Soccer and beanbag games

● Monkey bars

● Wobble cushions

● Skipping ropes

● Play-based balance and strength challenges

Ruby’s Amazing Progress!

Since starting physiotherapy, Ruby has achieved some incredible milestones:

  • Improved endurance — walking much longer distances on a family holiday before needing rest breaks
  • Placed 6th overall in her school cross-country with only minimal walking breaks
  • Can balance on one leg for over 30 seconds while catching and throwing a ball!
  • Now completes a full rung on the monkey bars independently
  • Can catch a ball with one hand
  • Increased confidence at school — including joining the school bowling team!

Most importantly, Ruby has developed greater confidence in her body, increased independence, and a growing willingness to participate alongside her peers!

We feel so lucky to have been given the privilege of meeting and working with Ruby, she is amazing.
