Nicole

Meet Nicole, one of our fantastic Active Ability clients!

“My name is Nicole, and I am 43 years of age. I started exercise physiology sessions with my EP Monique (pictured above) after it was recommended by my support coordinator to help manage my Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy. I chose Active Ability because of their specialty of home appointments, as it was convenient and very flexible for my availability.

Exercise has been difficult for me to participate in independently as it isn’t my area of interest and I feel safer from falls with supervision from Monique. I’m enjoying completing exercise face to face as it’s more engaging, and we get to chat and have a laugh.

Exercise physiology has helped me feel stronger and more confident as I improve my muscular strength, muscular endurance, balance, and coordination to work on my goals of increasing my independence, weight loss, maintaining capacity to work in retail, prevent falls and increase my quality of life. I used to have multiple falls per year. I have reduced this with the help of exercise physiology, and this year have had no falls at all!

At Active Ability I have worked with Tugba, and now Monique. We complete home sessions once per week (previously twice) using a range of equipment such as TheraBands, dumbbells, Theraputty, steps and hurdles. We are targeting muscle preservation and increasing capacity for daily living.

With exercise physiology, I can now complete the following that I previously found difficult:

  • Walk up and down stairs with one hand support
  • Stand at work for longer periods of time
  • Pick up items off the floor by myself
  • Helped my sore shoulder to have no pain
  • Walk in semi tandem stance for 6 metres without assistance
I am now working on the next stages:

  • Using stairs with no hand support
  • Walking backwards
  • Picking up heavier items off the floor
  • Walking in tandem stance
  • Reaching overhead
Great work Nicole, keep up the amazing work!
Amanda
