Client Story – Paediatrics Physiotherapy Services – with baby Mary

Physiotherapy plays a vital role to support the growth and development of children with disabilities so they can move, play, and live as independently as possible — and we’re here to enable that for your child!

One of our amazing Active Ability clients, a 5 month old called Mary, has positional torticollis.

What is positional torticollis? According to Perth Children’s Hospital, positional or postural torticollis – occurs when the infant favours turning to one side.

Mary has been working with Active Ability’s Paediatric Physiotherapist, here’s what Mary’s mum said about her physiotherapy sessions (with our fantastic physiotherapist) Lachlan Foster:

1. How long have you been accessing physiotherapy services at Active Ability?

Since July of this year (2025), so for 2 months.

2. What were your initial reasons for accessing services, and what goals did you have for Mary?

Mary had positional torticollis ,with right preference, due to her delivery being vacuumed out. The paediatrician recommended we do physiotherapy to address this. The goal is to help Mary turn her head, to her left, with ease.

3. How have sessions helped Mary in her day-to-day life? Have you noticed any changes or improvements?

Initially her neck was stiff and favouring one side. This would cause her discomfort in multiple day-to-day activities e.g. during tummy time, turning to look at me or the TV, and being in the car seat. After having a couple of sessions with Lachlan, and his advice with providing some exercises to implement at home with Mary, her neck movement had improved dramatically. She was moving her head to her left side easily and was able to look around more.

4. Have you learnt any skills or ideas from sessions that you have now applied to Mary’s daily life and activities?

Yes, Lachlan provided a document with exercises to help with her neck and I implemented these. He went through the early development milestones with me that Mary should be achieving. Lachlan also showed me some strategies to use with Mary, to encourage rolling and crawling.

5. What has been the best part of working with your Active Ability physiotherapist?

Lachlan is a highly knowledgeable man, who really knew what would work with Mary. I am so happy we were paired with Lachlan. He was great with Mary. Lachlan was patient with her and the information he provided was on point.

6. Any other feedback that you have?

I highly recommend Lachlan. He is friendly, professional and patient. If I ever need a physio again, I will definitely be asking for Lachlan.
