Say Hello to John!

John lives in his cosy apartment where he enjoys action movies, building model aeroplanes and tanks, and sharing plenty of jokes with his support workers. For almost two years, John has been working with his exercise physiologist at Active Ability to improve his mobility, manage his disability-related symptoms, and reduce his risk of falls.

During his sessions, John completes a mix of strength and balance exercises and pairs these with walking practice to help transfer his gains into everyday life. He also follows a home exercise program that he can complete independently or with help from his support workers, which has played a major role in his progress.

Recently, John set himself a big new goal:

Transitioning from using a four-wheeled walker to a walking stick when walking. This has sparked an extra level of motivation for John, and his hard work is paying off!

Here are some of John’s fantastic wins:

• Consistent home exercise routine: John once found it hard to stay motivated with his exercises, but now he regularly completes them 3–4 times a week.

His support workers help him track his sessions on a progress chart proudly displayed on his wall. Amazing effort, John!

• Longer and more confident walking: John used to walk short distances in the corridor of his apartment building.

With improved strength and endurance, he now enjoys outdoor walks at the local park—often for more than 30 minutes at a time using his walker.

• Preparing for a walking stick: To build the skills needed to safely use a walking stick when walking, John has been practising by supporting himself with just one hand on his walker.

He’s even progressed to short bouts of unsupported walking, and his support workers have noticed him practising this safely more and more at home!

John’s Amazing Dedication!

Through dedication, persistence, and a great sense of humour, John has made incredible strides toward his goal. Achieving greater independence with a walking stick would open up his world even more—allowing him to explore the community with confidence.

Keep up the fantastic work, John! We’re all cheering for you.
