Heath’s Story
Say hello to Heath!
Heath experienced a stroke in 2022, which resulted in left-sided hemiparesis affecting his arm and leg.
From Confinement to Confidence
For a period of time after his stroke, Heath felt confined to his home due to frequent falls and reduced confidence when moving around in the community. Activities such as walking longer distances, navigating stairs and spending time outdoors often felt difficult and risky.
The Power of Consistent Practice
Heath has been working closely with his physiotherapist at Active Ability to gradually rebuild his strength, balance, and trust in his body again through engaging in exercise and movements that carry over into real-world environments.
Heath also completes a structured home exercise program and consistently puts in the work between sessions, which has led to many fantastic wins.
Turning Obstacles into Opportunities
Where Heath once avoided uneven surfaces and stairs, he is now practising step-ups, obstacle negotiation and dynamic balance tasks.
Although he continues to experience falls, the frequency and severity of these falls have reduced, and Heath is now better able to recover when trips happen, problem-solve, and move more confidently in complex environments.
Setting Sights on the Future
These improvements are supporting his goal of returning to work as a draftsman and help him feel more capable when navigating public spaces.
Reclaiming Independence and Connection
Beyond physical gains, some of the biggest and most positive changes have been in Heath’s independence and quality of life. Heath lives on a large apricot farm, and one of his most meaningful goals is to confidently walk around the property using his walking stick – something that once felt out of reach but is now becoming more achievable with consistent practice. He is also spending more time out of the house, including catching up with long-time friends at the local pub, which he previously avoided due to fear of falling.
With ongoing physiotherapy, dedication to his rehab, and a willingness to keep pushing forward, Heath continues to build confidence, independence, and safer movement in his everyday life. Great work, Heath, keep up the great work!
