Change 5: Provider Registration Taskforce and changes to registration status

Home » Disability and the NDIS » Change 5: Provider Registration Taskforce and changes to registration status

The NDIS Provider and Worker Registration Taskforce was established in February 2024 to provide advice for the new risk proportionate regulatory model that was proposed in the NDIS review. The taskforce released their advice on 2 August 2024, which included 11 recommendations and 10 implementation actions.

On 16 September 2024 the first recommendation was implemented by the Australian Government. This change now requires all platform providers, support coordinators and Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers are NDIS registered with the NDIS quality and Safeguards Commission. This recommendation will require amendments to the National Disability Insurance Scheme ‘Provider Registration and Practice Standards’ Rules 2018. The NDIS commission made this an immediate response as they have identified an increased risk of violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of people with disability by those who were not registered.

Some other recommendations included:

  • A 4-tier registration system
  • Purchase visibility applies to goods purchased such as ramps and handrails
  • Basic registration: those providing low-risk support, such as sole traders
  • Self-directed registration: participants or guardians who directly contract their supports
  • General registration: those offering supports that require skill and training as well as one-on-one contact
  • Advanced registration: those offering supports in high-risk settings or closed settings

Along with this change, other responses to recommendations will be co-designed with the disability community during the consultation, which began in October 2024.

What does this mean for NDIS participants?

  • A new framework that supports and UPHOLDS your RIGHTS as an NDIS participant
  • A more CONVENIENT and VISIBLE NDIS provider market
  • A market that provides SAFE and high QUALITY support
  • BETTER complaints management and resolution systems with all providers
  • Can only choose supports that are NDIS registered
  • All your NDIS providers will have to complete audits, risk assessments and compliance monitoring to receive payment from NDIS funds

Stay tuned for more updates!
