Say hello to Sue, one of our fabulous Active Ability clients! Sue has utilised an exercise physiologist and physiotherapist in her multi-disciplinary team now for several years to help manage symptoms of her intellectual disability and comorbidities, including previous falls history and musculoskeletal injuries from this. Sue is seen both in her private home and at her day program to help increase her strength, balance and overall mobility with the goal of improving her confidence and independence.

Here are some of Sue’s wins to date:

  • Sue says that she loves her exercise sessions because we have lots of fun! She loves ABBA and is known to sing and dance along to “Fernando” with her exercise physiologist in between exercises.
  • Sue’s day program staff have noticed multiple meaningful improvements since commencing physical therapies. They’ve reported that she is much more confident mobilising on site and within the community. They’ve also said that where she would previously ask for support immediately to mobilise, particularly around stairs, she now says that she’d like to try by herself first.
  • Sue has objectively improved her overall balance, as well as her lower limb strength and endurance, and can now step down from a gutter without practitioner support where she was once very hesitant and needed two-handed support.

Through hard work with her exercise physiologist and physiotherapist, Sue continues to progress and increase her confidence, enabling her to engage in activities she enjoys including going on holidays or out for lunch. Well done Sue, keep smashing your goals!
