Get to know your NDIS physiotherapist, Winnie Liang
We’ve asked our wonderfully kind and patient physiotherapist, Winnie, a couple of questions so that you can get to know her!
Why did you become a physiotherapist?
I have passion to help enhance people’s lives through movement and function. I always feel fulfilled when aiding others to recover from injuries, surgeries, or illnesses. Witnessing their progress and being a part of their journey toward better health is deeply rewarding. My strong interest in how human body works and being able to apply that knowledge practically to improve someone’s well-being can be incredibly satisfying. Being able to significantly improve someone’s ability to move, function independently, manage pain, or prevent injuries can have a profound impact on their overall quality of life.
What has led to your passion for working in disability?
My passion for working in disability involves a commitment to understanding the unique challenges faced by people with disability and working towards creating a more inclusive and supportive society. It’s about empowering individuals to live fulfilling lives regardless of their abilities.
As a physio, I can conduct thorough assessments to understand the specific challenges and abilities of each individual. Develop personalized treatment plans to address their mobility issues, pain management, muscle weakness, and any other goals they may have. Together with them, we can create a long-term rehabilitation program that adapts to their changing needs, ensuring ongoing support and progress.
Do you have a memorable experience of assisting a client to achieve their goals that you’d like to share?
I had a 6yo client with Autism who would like to play soccer. Establishing trust was key. Taking the time to understand his preferences, sensitivities, and communication style. Then I collaborated with the client and his mum to set realistic and achievable goals. These goals were specific, measurable, and tailored to his interests and strengths. Providing structure and predictability to him was reassuring. Clearly outline the activities for each session, incorporating familiar routines while gradually introducing new elements also worked. During the sessions, we celebrated small achievements, and I used positive reinforcement to motivate progress. I remained flexible and patient. We did understand that progress might take time and eventually my client started to play soccer!!!!
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy playing tennis, bush walking, outdoor activities, gym workouts and reading.
What is your favourite sport or physical activity?
Definitely bush walking.
What is one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you? Do you have a hidden talent?
I do have a significant sense of humour but it might take a while for me to show it.
What is your favourite movie, book and holiday?
Movie: Titanic
Book: Maybe you should talk to someone
Holiday: Tasmania
