Get to know your NDIS exercise physiologist, Tamara Black
We’ve asked our friendly and supportive exercise physiologist, Tamara, a couple of questions so that you can get to know her!
Why did you become an exercise physiologist?
I’ve always wanted be in a career where I was able to help people. When I left high school, I started studying Nursing. Whilst on work placement at a nursing home, I discovered exercise physiology and saw the benefit it provided to the patients.
What has led to your passion for working in disability?
During university I was fortunate to be able to experience life as an exercise physiologist in a variety of settings and with a variety of clients. Through these experiences, I instantly knew that working with disability was for me.
Do you have a memorable experience of assisting a client to achieve their goals that you’d like to share?
My biggest achievement in my career so far is assisting one of my paediatric clients to be able to take her first independent steps just before her 3rd birthday, and seeing the impact that had on her and her family.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy gardening, puzzles and going for walks.
What is your favourite sport or physical activity?
At the moment I love soccer, but I have a competitive streak so enjoy all sorts of sports and games.
In another life, if you weren’t an exercise physiologist, what do you think you’d be doing?
Probably a midwife. Or the dream would be to live on a farm with lots of animals growing my own food.
What is one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you? Do you have a hidden talent?
I hate mangos and I can’t wink.
