Get to know your NDIS physiotherapist, Lachlan Foster!

We’ve invited our dedicated and very loved Physiotherapist, Lachlan Foster, to answer a few questions so our community can get to know the person behind the care!

Why did you become a physiotherapist?

Playing sports growing up came with its own injuries which led to an interest in anatomy and the human body. That interest continued to grow and eventuated in going to university to study it further. Physiotherapy fulfilled that interest as well as giving an opportunity to assist those, not just with injuries, in moving towards doing what they wished to do.

What has led to your passion for working in disability?

A placement in an undergraduate gave the opportunity to spend time with those with presentations including multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries and cerebral palsy in a research setting. The participants spoke of how they wished they had been assisted in improving their capacity earlier on in their journey; however, neither had access nor assistance in doing so and in that I saw a gap which I wanted to fill.

Do you have a memorable experience of assisting a client to achieve their goals that you’d like to share?

A lovely lady I was working with had a brain tumour removed many decades before I met her resulting in coma, weakness and decreased confidence which ultimately led to a reliance on a 4-wheel walker while mobilising around the home. Over the time I was working with her, she built up her strength and capacity greatly and was proud of her accomplishments now, being able to confidently walk around the home without her walker. When I arrived one week later she had a huge smile on her face telling how she walked through the local shops without her walker with all the store attendants giving her hugs and being amazed at her progress. Seeing her excitement and how proud she was of her progression is a great memory.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

You’ll find me pottering around the car or researching what I could do next with my pride and joy.

What is your favourite sport or physical activity?

NRL – Go the Panthers!

In another life, if you weren’t a physiotherapist, what do you think you’d be doing?

Dream job would be driving in TCR touring cars (street-style race cars).

What is one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you? Do you have a hidden talent?

I can juggle reasonably well, at one point being able to juggle 4 balls.

What is your favourite movie, book and holiday?

Movie – How to Train Your Dragon (2010)

Book – Psychopharmacology by Joe Wegmann, RPh, LCSW

Holiday – Seeing family in England
