Get to know your NDIS physiotherapist, Leo Garaci
We’ve asked our supportive and knowledgeable physiotherapist, Leo, a couple of questions so that you can get to know him!
Why did you become a physiotherapist?
I’ve always been passionate about exercise, movement, and helping others improve their quality of life. Physiotherapy allows me to combine these interests in a meaningful way by supporting clients to achieve their individual goals; whether that’s gaining more independence, improving mobility, or returning to activities they enjoy. I value building strong therapeutic relationships and making a positive difference in people’s lives through evidence-based care.
What has led to your passion for working in disability?
My passion for working in the disability sector developed through clinical placements and early professional experiences where I saw the positive impact that tailored, person-centred care makes. I loved the opportunity to support individuals living with a disability in achieving greater independence and participation, and enjoy the challenge of adapting therapy to meet diverse needs.
Do you have a memorable experience of assisting a client to achieve their goals that you’d like to share?
One of my most memorable experiences was working with a young child diagnosed with global developmental delay. When we first started, they had significant difficulty with postural control and required full support to stand. Through consistent therapy focused on strength, balance, and motor planning, we gradually progressed to assisted standing and then independent steps with a walker. The day they took their first steps on their own was incredibly special – their excitement and their family’s joy reminded me why I chose this profession. It was a powerful moment that showed how small milestones can have a huge impact.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I enjoy staying active and spending quality time with the people closest to me. I regularly go to the gym, as it helps me stay focused and energised. I also love doing escape rooms with friends – they’re a fun way to challenge ourselves and think creatively as a team. I’m a big foodie and always on the lookout for new restaurants and cuisines to try. Exploring different flavours and local spots is something I really enjoy. When I get the chance, I also like going to music festivals and live events – they’re a great way to relax and enjoy good company, music and atmosphere.
What is your favourite sport or physical activity?
My favourite physical activity is lifting weights, as it helps me stay strong, focused, and motivated. I also enjoy playing basketball and soccer in my free time. Both sports are a great way to stay active, connect with others, and keep my competitive spirit alive. I value how physical activity brings people together and supports both physical and mental wellbeing.
In another life, if you weren’t a physiotherapist, what do you think you’d be doing?
I’m currently studying with the goal of entering medical school to become an orthopaedic surgeon, as I’ve always been drawn to the health sector. But if I weren’t in healthcare, I’d definitely want to be a chef. I love cooking and experimenting with new flavours, and being a foodie, the idea of creating meals that bring people together really appeals to me.
What is one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you? Do you have a hidden talent?
People are often surprised to learn that I’m currently training for my first bodybuilding competition – it’s been a challenging but rewarding journey. I also have a hidden talent for cooking, especially traditional Lao food, which I love sharing with family and friends. And for a fun party trick – I can flip my tongue upside down!
What is your favourite movie, book and holiday?
I’m a big comic book nerd, so anything superhero-related is a favourite – especially Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and the Marvel universe. My favourite book is The Happiest Man on Earth by Eddie Jaku. It’s a powerful reminder of resilience, gratitude and finding joy in life. My favourite holiday is Christmas – I love the festive spirit, spending time with family, and of course, the food!
