Joseph Edwards Exercise Physiology

Getting to know your exercise physiologist, Joseph Edwards

We wanted to give you the opportunity to get to know Active Ability’s wonderful and engaging exercise physiologist Joseph Edwards, so we’ve asked him a couple of questions so that we can share his answers with you.

Why did you become an exercise physiologist?

I started University not knowing what I wanted to do with my career but just knowing that I wanted to work in an active job and knowing that it needed to be something to do with improving other people’s health. Once ‘on the job’ as a student, I realised that exercise physiology was what I needed to do!

What has led to your passion for disability?

I developed a passion for disability whilst working as a support worker at the same time as studying at University so knew that I wanted to continue once becoming an exercise physiologist. It really inspired me that my role could have so much influence over a person’s happiness, even if it were only a small amount of support that I was able to provide them with.

Do you have a memorable experience of assisting a client to achieve their goals that you’d like to share?

Yes! Along with a physiotherapist, I have worked with a person who has Multiple Sclerosis. They had been a wheelchair user for approximately 20 years because of their disability by the time we commenced support. As a result of our combined exercise physiology and physiotherapy intervention, we were able to support our client to not only get up out of her chair and start walking with a frame over short distances, but also to complete daily activities that she hadn’t be able to do in a long time!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time I love to travel and to read.

What is your favourite sport or physical activity?

Never thought I would say this but.. running! Though I always like to change my routine up to keep it interesting.

In another life, if you weren’t an exercise physiologist, what do you think you’d be doing?

If I weren’t an exercise physiologist I think I’d like to be a travel blogger! I’d love to show people all of the amazing places that they can travel to by utilising my experiences and photos.

What is one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you? Do you have a hidden talent?

I’ve completed all 8 grades of piano!

What is your favourite movie, book and holiday?

Movie: Pirates of the Caribbean

Book: Throne of Glass, Sarah J. Maas

Holiday: My first solo backpacking trip for a month through Italy
