Get to know your NDIS dietitian, Jennifer Tran
We’ve asked our caring and empathic dietitian, Jennifer Tran, a couple of questions so that you can get to know her!
Why did you become a dietitian?
I became a dietitian because food was so critical to all aspects of my life, culture, mental health, and physical health. I believe food should help you stay healthy but also be enjoyable, and I wanted to help others achieve this relationship too.
What has led to your passion for disability?
I have family members with disabilities who I love very much. I never want them or anyone with a disability to be limited in what they want to achieve in their lives. I also believe every person with a disability is so different- it’s fascinating to me and I love learning more about it all.
Do you have a memorable experience of assisting a client to achieve their goals that you’d like to share?
I helped a young client who would only eat a few foods, at times of the day that were difficult for their mother to accommodate. I brought food moulds and toys to asisst in our therapy sessions together and although nervous at first, they warmed up to me during the appointment. We discussed and modelled a few changes we could make to help with this. This proved very helpful and their mother let me know that it really increased her confidence in helping her child. It was a very warming experience for me as a dietitian.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like keeping busy, whether that’s by reading, playing tennis, eating good food, spending time with my friends and family, or visiting an exhibition at the Art Gallery or History Museum.
What is your favourite food?
Anything from French bistros to Japanese takeaway. Nothing beats my mum’s cooking though
In another life, if you weren’t a dietitian, what do you think you’d be doing?
I would have loved to become a vet and work with animals or go to culinary school.
What is one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you? Do you have a hidden talent?
Surprising fact: Despite being of Asian background, I have a terrible spice tolerance
Hidden talent (and guilty pleasure): Words with Friends
Favourite movie, book and holiday?
Favourite book: Harry Potter
Favourite movie: Crazy Rich Asians (Singapore is amazing)
Favourite holiday: Christmas
