Get to know your NDIS Exercise Physiologist, Divyasha Kumar!

Why did you become an exercise physiologist?

I became an exercise physiologist because I always wanted to work in the rehab space. I felt that working with people to get them back on their feet and support them had always been interesting. Along the way I discovered the world of exercise physiology and became very interested and excited about the new upcoming career. I enjoyed the holistic approach to exercise therapy and the long term relationships built with clients.

What has led to your passion for working in disability?

Once I started studying exercise physiology, there were many avenues I could take. One in particular always stood out to me, and that was working in the disability space. My placements supporting individuals living with disabilities were my favourite and most rewarding. I felt that my role as an exercise physiologist could be beneficial in making meaningful differences in people’s lives and fostering positive change.

Do you have a memorable experience of assisting a client to achieve their goals that you’d like to share?

Some of the best parts of the job include seeing my clients improve and being an integral part of that change. One of my clients has experienced great improvements and has been able to attain many of her goals. This client has been completing exercise for at least 5 years and would struggle with motivation and engagement issues. After working with her, we have been able to create a program that is both engaging and fun and works towards her goals. Since then, she is now stronger, more mobile and enjoys exercise.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I am a very simple person, and so in my spare time I like to enjoy my downtime by watching movies, catching up with friends and family…stock standard. I also have a bad habit of starting projects but never quite completing them, hence my room is littered with random crochet, knitting, colouring and painting projects.

What is your favourite sport or physical activity?

My favourite physical activity would be dance and pilates.

In another life, if you weren’t an exercise physiologist, what do you think you’d be doing?

Hmmm, I think I would probably be a teacher or have my own small business.

What is one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you? Do you have a hidden talent?

Hmm.. I don’t have any hidden talents, but I have been dancing since the age of 5, starting from jazz up to classical indian dance now.

What is your favourite holiday?

Fiji, it always reminds me of my second home.
